A First-Timer’s Guide to Breckenridge

Planning your first trip to the beautiful mountain town of Breckenridge? Located just 2 hours west of Denver, Breckenridge is the mountain town located at the base of the Ten Mile Range. This historic town was founded after a discovery of gold along the Blue River led to the establishment of a base camp in the summer of 1859. With a permanent population of less than 4,000, Breck still maintains its mountain charm.

Where to Eat

Briar Rose Chophouse & Saloon

Looking for one of the best steaks in Breckenridge? Look no further than the Briar Rose! Make a reservation for the dining room, or head over early (it fills up quickly!) for a spot in the saloon and enjoy the bar menu (1/2 price at happy hour!). We recommend the BBQ Egg Rolls and Bleu Cheese Potato Chips. Top it off with a glass of wine (2-for-1 at happy hour), the most generous pour I’ve ever experienced, or a delicious cocktail.

Soupz On

Yelp

This is a local favorite, and you will frequently see a line out the door around lunchtime. Soupz On is comfort food at its finest! Choose from their incredible soups, salads, sandwiches and breads. My must-haves are the Jalapeno Cheddar Focaccia, the Caesar Salad and the Tomato Risotto soup. With that being said, it’s always a tough choice at Soupz On!

Breckenridge Distillery

The Breckenridge Distillery has been around for years, but just recently they expanded their offerings to a full-service restaurant run by Chef Daniel O’Brien, who appeared on a season of “Top Chef”. Choose from family-style offerings to entree dishes and appetizers, and definitely don’t forget to try a craft cocktail! Don’t skip out on the Hasselback Poutine, the Charcuterie Board offerings and any of the noodles.

Where to Drink

Modis

Modis, located right on Main Street, is known for its fantastic wine selection, amazing craft cocktails and incredible happy hour deals. Keep it classic with a flawless Old Fashion, or mix it up and give the Monkey Gland, complete with  gin, fresh orange, house made grenadine and absinthe, a try! No matter what you order, you will be impressed by the talented bartenders of Modis. The Breck 84 and the Mexican Firing Squad are personal favorites!

RMU Tavern & Retail

Rocky Mountain Underground, best known for their high-quality and local ski gear, recently opened a new shop and tavern in the heart of Breckenridge. Breck’s first ski shop and bar, the RMU Tavern features 12 rotating craft beers and Summit County’s only Beer Engine, a traditional and historic way of serving cask fermented ales, also known as “Firkins”.

Blue River Bistro

Blue River Bistro is known for having some of the best martinis, as well as the best happy hour deals, in town. Located on the north end of Main Street, the Blue River Bistro is home of the 2-for-1 martini happy hour from 3pm – 6pm and 9pm – 12am. Don’t forget that Breck sits at 9,600 feet above sea level and alcohol will have a stronger affect on you, so grab some 2-for-1 appetizers to snack on while you sip your craft martinis.

Best Coffee Shops

Clint’s Bakery & Deli

Packed with delicious baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, ice cream and coffee, Clint’s is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The Snickerdoodle coffee brew is a tough one to say no to, but the talented barista staff will have you craving espresso. And how do you decide between the sweet flavors of the Blueberry Muffin or a savory bagel sandwich? The only solution is to check out the offerings at Clint’s at least twice.

Cuppa Joecuppajoe

Tucked away on the upper floor of a Ridge Street shop, Cuppa Joe is one of our favorite hidden gems. Between their amazing Chai Tea Lattes and authentic Flat Whites, Cuppa Joe will keep you coming back for more! Don’t skip out on the food, however, as they are home to one of the biggest and best Breakfast Burritos in town. Trust us, you’re going to need both hands for this breakfast.

The Crown

Known as Breck’s boozy coffee shop, The Crown is a must when you are in Breckenridge. Whether you are looking for a classic cup of coffee or cappuccino, or something with a little more kick, The Crown will surely impress! Stop on by for lunch as well and give one of the amazing paninis a try. I’m a big fan of The Wellington and The Lincoln, but you really can’t go wrong with anything at The Crown.

Don’t forget to check out their new sister shop, Lucille’s Boutique, just across the alley-way!
