Winter ’23-’24 Events in Breckenridge, Colorado

While the Breckenridge area is celebrated for its proximity to thrilling whitewater rafting adventures during the summer months, the winter season in Breckenridge offers an entirely different array of thrilling events and activities.

With pristine snow-covered landscapes, Breckenridge transforms into a winter wonderland from November to March. In this blog post, we’ll explore the exciting winter events and attractions that make Breckenridge a magical destination throughout the winter months.

November 

Opening Day at Breckenridge Ski Resort: November 10th, 2023 marks the beginning of the ski and snowboarding season in Breckenridge. Locals and visitors eagerly await the opening day at Breckenridge Ski Resort, one of North America’s premier ski destinations. The crisp mountain air, fresh powder, and endless slopes provide the perfect setting for your winter adventure.  

Opening day usually includes music, snacks, and lots of fun. Be sure to check out our favorite local Ski and Board rental shop, Breckenridge Ski & Sport for all your winter rental needs.

The Breckenridge Nordic Center and Frisco Adventure Park also open in late November, ushering in the season of snow sports including snowshoeing, snowcat adventures, and sleigh rides. These activities allow you to explore the beautiful forests and trails with guided tours or solo outings.

December 

The Lighting of Breckenridge Race of the Santas: To kick off the holiday season, Breckenridge hosts the annual Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas event in early December. This year it falls on December 2nd, 2023. Register for the half-mile race and become one of the many Santas filling the Breckenridge streets with cheer. This is a hilarious and heartwarming event that invites participants to dress as Santa Claus and run a brisk race.

The Lighting of Breckenridge happens right after the race, filling the town with joy, as more than 250,000 lights turn on all at once in the Blue River Plaza on Main Street. The event also includes a Holiday Market and a Dog Parade.

Holiday Craft Fairs: December is the time for holiday shopping, and Breckenridge offers a variety of craft fairs and markets, showcasing local artisans and their unique creations. Find one-of-a-kind gifts, souvenirs, and crafts at these fairs, and support the local community. 

Ullr Fest: Ullr Fest is a Breckenridge tradition that honors the Norse god of snow, Ullr. The festival, this year on December 7-9th, 2023, features a parade, bonfire, ski and snowboard race, comedy night, ice skating party, and an “Ullr Shotski” world-record attempt for the longest shotski. An Ullr King and Queen will also be crowned at the event. The three days of fun represent a lively festival celebrating all things winter.

January 

International Snow Sculpture Championships: One of the highlights of winter in Breckenridge is the International Snow Sculpture Championships. This year, sculpture building will take place the week of January 22-26th and sculpture viewing January 26-31st. Artists from around the world gather to craft intricate sculptures from massive blocks of snow and are only allowed to use hand tools. Visitors will be able to view the sculptures and vote for people’s choice awards!

Valentine’s Day in Breckenridge: Breckenridge provides a romantic backdrop for celebrating Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s a cozy dinner by the fireplace or a scenic winter hike followed by a relaxing soak in hot tubs, this mountain town offers a memorable setting for lovebirds. A sleigh ride offers a unique romantic experience, with some including dinner or a dinner theater. Breckenridge also offers numerous fine dining options for a romantic date night dinner.

Mardi Gras in the Mountains: In late February or early March, Mardi Gras in the Mountains brings the spirit of New Orleans to Breckenridge. Join the festivities with colorful parades, enjoy Cajun cuisine, live music, and a festive atmosphere.

St. Patrick’s Day: This year, look forward to St. Patrick’s Day in Breckenridge on March 17th, 2024. This holiday is filled with plenty of celebrating, as local restaurants and bars offer food and drink specials, and the area’s several Irish pubs, including Burke & Riley’s and Cala Pub may host events or activities.

Spring Break in Breckenridge: March is an ideal time for spring break in Breckenridge. With great snow conditions, plenty of activities, and fewer crowds than in the peak winter months, it is a fantastic time for a family getaway or trip with friends.
