Ullr Fest – the annual celebration of snow, to put it lightly. Ullr is the Norse god of snow, thus the Viking-theme to the festival. Described as a town wide snow fest, this event has people of all ages, skier and snowboarders alike, sporting Viking gear, helmets and outfits. This event, held January 11-14, 2017 in Breckenridge, is definitely a favorite among locals, with an abundance of libations and festivities. The unparalleled favorite event is the Ullr Parade, where crazy float participants ski off jumps on Main Street or ride down the road in a hot tub. Worried about the cold? Don’t be! There is an epic Ullr bonfire following the parade.
Ullympics is another popular event, featuring a series of unique competitions to see who is the ultimate odd-winter sports champion. There is also an Ullr Ball where a Ullr King and Queen are crowned. Don’t miss out on the Ullr Ice Plunge on Friday. Test your mettle with the new frosty water swim in Maggie Pond on Friday. Hangover breakfasts, a DJ, $0 entry fee and toasty prizes reward those who brave the icy challenge. Get ready to freeze and thaw out to the extreme!
But the question still stands…What is Ullr fest? In Norse mythology Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) was the winter god. He was the son of Sif and the stepson of Thor, the “God of Thunder.” Ullr loved the cold, and delighted in traveling over the country on his skis or skates. He also delighted in the chase, and pursued his game through the Northern Forests. The history of Ullr and Nordic gods also teach us what amazing partiers the vikings were. Combining the love of snow, fun events, and our desire to please the “snow god,” you get today’s Ullr Fest in Breck!
